What to Do If Your Air Conditioner is Leaking Water into the Furnace

What to Do If Your Air Conditioner is Leaking Water into the Furnace

As a homeowner, discovering water leaking from your air conditioner into your furnace can be concerning. Here are some steps you can take to address this issue:

1. Turn Off the AC Unit:

• Immediately turn off your air conditioning system to prevent further water damage and allow any frozen coils to thaw.

2. Check and Replace the Air Filter:

• Locate and inspect the air filter. If it’s dirty or clogged, replace it with a new one. A clean filter ensures proper airflow and can help prevent freezing of the evaporator coil.

3. Inspect the Condensate Drain Line:

• Find the condensate drain line (a PVC pipe usually located near the indoor unit).

• Check for blockages and clear them using a wet/dry vacuum.

• Pour a mixture of bleach and water (50/50) down the drain line to prevent mold and algae buildup.

4. Examine the Drain Pan:

• Locate the drain pan under the evaporator coil.

• Check for any signs of damage, rust, or overflow. Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove any standing water.

5. Inspect for Ice Build-Up on the Evaporator Coil:

• Check the evaporator coil for ice build-up. If it’s frozen, allow it to thaw completely before addressing the root cause.

• Keep the system turned off until the ice has melted.

6. Ensure Proper Ventilation:

• Make sure all vents and registers are open and unobstructed to allow for proper airflow.

When to Call a Professional:

• Persistent Leaks: If the issue persists after taking these steps, it’s best to call a professional HVAC technician.

• Low Refrigerant Levels: If you suspect low refrigerant levels (e.g., the system isn’t cooling effectively or ice is forming on the coil), a professional needs to check and refill it.

• Electrical Issues: If you notice any electrical problems or are uncomfortable performing these tasks, contact a professional.
